What we collect

When you run a geolocation test, we collect and store the following data:

  • IP addresses — your public IPv4 and/or IPv6 address, which is the input sent to geolocation providers
  • User agent — your browser's user agent string
  • Approximate area — a non-identifiable geographic area derived from your device coordinates, used as an approximate location reference
  • GPS accuracy — the accuracy radius reported by your device's Geolocation API
  • Reverse-geocoded location — city, region, and country derived from your coordinates (the coordinates themselves are not stored)
  • Cloudflare metadata — the Cloudflare data center (colo) and country that served your request
  • Speedtest data — latency measurements and server location
  • Provider results — each geolocation provider's predicted coordinates, city, region, country, distance error, accuracy score, and response time
  • Account link — if you choose to sign in, a user ID is stored alongside your submissions so you can view your test history and export or delete your data. This is not used for identity tracking or profiling

What we do NOT collect

  • Exact GPS coordinates — your device coordinates are used in real-time for comparison and reverse geocoding but are never stored
  • Device fingerprints — we do not fingerprint your browser or device
  • Tracking cookies — we use no analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies

Legal basis for processing

We process data under legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f) / LGPD Art. 10). IP Accuracy is a public benchmarking tool. Processing IP geolocation data is necessary to fulfill the core purpose of comparing provider accuracy.

Users take affirmative action to participate — navigating to the test page and granting browser geolocation permission — which constitutes informed, voluntary participation in the benchmark.

Third-party recipients

Your IP address is sent to the following geolocation providers when you run a test: MaxMind GeoLite2, IPInfo, ipapi.is, IPGeolocation, IP2Location, IPRegistry, Pangea IP Intel, IPLocate, BigDataCloud, and ipdata.

We also use the following services:

  • Mapbox, Google Maps, OpenStreetMap Nominatim — reverse geocoding (coordinates to place names)
  • Clerk — authentication (if you create an account)
  • Cloudflare — hosting, CDN, DNS, and infrastructure

Each third-party service is subject to its own privacy policy. We send only the minimum data required for each service to function.

Data retention

Submissions and provider results are retained for as long as necessary to support long-term accuracy trend analysis. We review our data retention practices annually and will delete data that is no longer needed for this purpose. We may also introduce automated data retention limits in the future, at which point this policy will be updated.

Your rights

Under GDPR and LGPD, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Rectify inaccurate data
  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interest
  • Restrict processing in certain circumstances

Cookies and localStorage

IP Accuracy uses only functional cookies and storage:

  • Clerk authentication cookies — session management for signed-in users
  • Cloudflare cookies — technical cookies for security and performance (e.g., __cf_bm)
  • localStorage — UI preferences, test cooldown timers, and privacy notice dismissal state

We do not use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking cookies. Because only functional cookies are used, a consent management platform is not required under the ePrivacy Directive.

International transfers

IP Accuracy is hosted on Cloudflare's global network. Your data may be processed in data centers outside your country of residence. Geolocation providers are located in various jurisdictions. By using the service, you acknowledge that your IP address will be transmitted to these providers as part of the benchmarking process.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted by updating the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
